The data path runs from your device to the 5G router, over the mobile 5G spectrum to a nearby mast, through the provider's core network, and out to the wider internet. Because the spectrum is shared rather than a dedicated wire, performance moves around depending on how many people near you are using the same mast at the same time.
Several things shape what you get: distance to the mast, line of sight to it, congestion at peak times, the building's materials (thick walls cut signal), and where you place the router. In strong coverage, it can rival entry-level fibre. In weaker areas, it behaves more like enhanced 4G.
Speed, and how steady it is
5G home broadband is marketed on big headline speeds, often 100 Mbps to 500 Mbps and sometimes "gigabit-capable". Unlike full fibre, though, those speeds aren't fixed or guaranteed in the same way. They shift with evening congestion, cell capacity, network upgrades and local demand spikes.
Latency is usually better than 4G but can still sit above full fibre (FTTP). Most households won't notice, but competitive gaming, large cloud uploads and heavy business use will feel steadier on fibre. The short version is that 5G can be fast, but it is less predictable.
Installation
Easy setup is one of 5G's real strengths. You receive a pre-configured router, insert a SIM if one is needed, plug it into power, and position it near a window for the best signal.
Placement matters more than people expect. Moving the router even a metre or two can lift signal noticeably, and some routers show a signal strength indicator to help you find the best spot. There's no engineer visit, no drilling and no waiting on Openreach availability, which is what makes 5G appealing for renters and short-term lets.
Contracts and pricing
5G broadband is often sold as flexible, but the fine print varies. You'll see 30-day rolling contracts (at a higher monthly price), 12-month and 24-month terms, and CPI or RPI-linked annual increases.
Before signing, check whether speeds are capped, whether data is unlimited or subject to fair use, whether the router is included or loaned, and what happens if signal turns out to be weak at your address. Some providers offer a short trial, which is worth taking given how much performance can vary by location.

5G broadband works well for households with good 5G signal, moderate streaming and browsing, temporary accommodation, properties where fibre isn't available, and anyone who values flexibility. It suits less well a large household running 4K streams across several devices, homes with thick stone walls, businesses needing SLA-backed reliability, or gamers sensitive to latency.
